BASICS OF THE COURSE EACH WEEK

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK FOUR WRITING ABOUT WHAT YOU READ

Is music the key to success?

--or--

How has music impacted your experience of or thinking about life?

28 comments:

  1. As this post reveals, music can play a large role in becoming a successful individual because of what it teaches you. For example, Mr Todd points out that “there is a connection between years of practice and competition and what he calls the drive for perfection.” Music can teach you the value of hard work. I don’t think that a person will automatically be successful in their life because they play an instrument, but I believe that music can equip one with the skills needed to achieve “success.” It is then up to the person to apply those valuable skills. Moreover, I was not surprised to read that individuals such as Paula Zahn and Chuck Todd were musicians at heart.

I do not play any instruments. Although, I would like to learn how to play the piano one day. However, I do not feel doomed because I don’t play music. I feel that I am on a path to success because I work hard. I have learned that from sheer will. I think their are many avenues towards achieving success, just as their are many definitions to what success is exactly. Music is defiantly one key to achieving great things.

  2. Music is something that is often taken for granted, not on purpose of course, but it still happens. Its used as an emphasis for mood and setting in films; watching a horror film would be way less terrifying without the creepy musical score subconsciously winding you up for the moment when the villain appears. Certain songs are used to add mood to different events such as slow love songs for the dances at weddings or prom. Music is even applied as a stimulant for companies when people go into a store to shop or during their tv ads; has anyone ever walked into a silent convenience store? Song can be used as a way to motivate others, they are played in school rallies, gyms, concerts, and sporting events. Song serves to soothe the savage beast. It can be used at any time for any event in any place. Our lives are driven by song, rhythm, and sound. I know that in my place I am surrounded by music:when I work, sleep, drive, exercise, during my hobbies, and mostly when I need motivation to do homework.

  3. Music can influence your day in a big way, in a very short span of time. Even something like using a song as an alarm to wake up in the morning can have an effect on whether you leap out of bed with excitement, or reluctantly crawl out of it. As Samantha stated above me, music is used in many ways, one of the most popular modes is in movies to prepare the viewer for the events which are about to take place. Though it may not always be "music", the sounds and effects used allow one to anticipate what may happen, possibly saving themselves from a potential freak out. No matter how many exams or finals I've taken, I still find myself very anxious on test days, but listening to a song that I'm very familiar with may allow me to bring a familiar sense of comfort to the setting of my exam, allowing me to relax and handle whatever task is in front of me. Many of us are athletes, and I'm sure like myself, we all have that one playlist before games or intense activities to prepare us for just those occasions! Music can have an impact on me throughout every step of my day, that's why I don't listen to the radio... at least with my iPod I know what song is coming up next!

  4. As a musician, I can relate to this reading. I do see myself spending the majority of my day thinking musically, creatively and outside of the box. Not only am I a musician, I am an Industrial Designer with the ambition to get my electrical engineering degree. There is a mold that fits the characteristics of a person who plays music; however, that doesn't really mean that one has to be a musician to show commitment to success. People are within a musical world and don't realize it. Music is organic as we all are. Its just like walking and breathing. The flow of energy that we exude to practice, prepare, rehearse, and memorize is only a small factor towards become a successful individual. As part of the creative arts and the involvement is no different than participating in a sports club; however, music is an enhancement drug that only intensifies the far regions of the mind to relax and eliminate the hurdles that people accumulate over time. Music creates success and health.

  5. In 5th grade, due to the influence from my brother playing the cello, I chose to play the violin. Even though I do not currently play in an orchestra, I believe that my life would be very different if I had not played the violin for the 8 years that I did. As a young musician, I learned to listen attentively to all sounds around me. I was able to hone in on the pitches and ended up being able to tune my own instrument with a few stroke of my strings and turns of the knobs. When I played at large concerts, it felt so invigorating accomplishing such a task. It makes me feel at ease when I play and listen to music of all kinds. Music, along with other types of art activities has allowed me to open up to creativity by forcing me to read and memorize music and even produce my own simple songs. It has taught me to enjoy the camaraderie between myself and other musicians. This relationship has followed me throughout my life allowing me to work well with others quite naturally. Though playing an instrument has offered a range of opportunities for me, it has not been the only way that music has impacted my life. By listening to many different genres of music ranging from rap to country, I can literally correlate a song with my every part of my daily adventures. It amazes me how much of an effect that music has on me because I never really thought about it in depth. I now value what music has done for me and what it will continue to do for me.

  6. Is music the key to success?
There has been several of people who have become successful. Some people have become successful through music and others have been successful through playing an instrument but doing something completely different. In any case, I do believe that music is the key to success. Playing an instrument opens and the brain function in an undiscovered area. Knowing how to read music and playing an instrument, makes the brain develop more. Once the brain is more developed, then the human discovers and processes an skill that not all the humans posses. Having more areas of the brain functioning, makes the individual more aware and more educated thus creating a better path for learning. I do believe that the key to success is education and music can play a big role to make it happen. Not necessarily the key to success is music but through more areas of the brain are open and discovered making the individual eager to learn. We have seen through history all the characters that have been influence through music and become successful. Even Edwin Bethoveen had lost of hearing and he still became very successful through music. Music is a path to become successful .

  7. I believe that music is a key component that contributes to success. Personally when I listen to classical music or meditation type music, I find myself focusing on writing papers and doing assignments more quickly and efficiently. Many of my friends were in band in middle school and they are attending great, highly ranked colleges so I really think that helped them in the long run. However, I was not involved in band and I cannot play any musical instruments whatsoever and I have a 3.65 GPA and have not had a grade lower than a B in the two years I have been attending CSUB. I also think that it depends on each individual’s learning abilities whether they are successful through music or while completing assignments while music is on. I have a hard time thinking abstractly and processing other individual’s points of views and listening to music sometimes helps my thinking process. Overall I do believe that music is a key component to success, but I do not think it is the key to success.

  8. When I read the subject for the blog entry it was really hard to think about because I didn't have a lot of experience with music. Don't get me wrong, I do listen to music. However, I don't really pay attention to the words unless I get curious about what the musician is trying to say. Perfect example would be when I listen to Eminem. If I thought for a secong that music was the key to success I would have lost hope and stopped trying to succeeed at life. As for the other question, I don't think music has impacted my life like that. The only thing that I can think about with music in my life and having anything to do with it would be when I was in the army. What I am referring to would be cadence, national anthem, and the biggest one would be my units creed if you can even call that a song.

  9. I'm not sure music is the key to success, but after reading about all the well known people having music greatly impact their life, I will consider it. I have seen the decline in music too and it is disappointing, because I enjoy listening to many different kinds of music. Much like the people talked about in the reading, I believe music helps people relax and see different views of whatever is impacting their lives at that moment. I know that music has a positive impact on schoolwork, game playing, and working out for me. Music can get a person pumped to try harder and can help them remember problems or questions for tests. Just like how many people retain information through their subconscious mind, music may have a connection to how people work better because it helps you connect to this subconscious part of yourself. So I would have to say that music can have a big part of success in a person's life.

  10. I believe that music itself isn't the key to success. I think that success is driven off of commitment, dedication, patience. Anyone can pick up an instrument, practice, and learn how to play. I think the individuals that are "successful" in life with a relation to music, are those that have the traits listed above. I think that it all comes down to who practiced the hardest to get the solo, or who studied the sheet music well enough to memorize the part for the audition. I know that playing an instrument and being able to read sheet music is similar to knowing several languages. That alone sets someone apart from others. However, in regard to music being the key to success, I really don't think knowing how to play an instrument will get someone very far. I think the tools that come with playing an instrument creates an exceptional individual. However, not everyone will get the solo. It comes down to how committed someone was to the art, how much time and effort someone dedicated, and how patient someone was to take each step by step to mastering their craft.

  11. The article “Is Music the Key to Success,” by Joanne Lipman makes a very strong statement and supports it with valid points. The article discusses many successful politicians and entrepreneurs and the one commonality is they all played or play instruments. I never played an instrument but I have always been envious of people who can just pick up an instrument and create a melody. Music has impacted my life significantly and more so as an adult. Music helps me to focus on various physical tasks and projects. It also helps me to intellectually focus with my studies. Music helps elevate my imagination, and creativity.
I often find myself having to fix things around my house or helping my family with projects and music really helps me to achieve them. When I designed and built my daughter’s robot costume, I’d play music to help me concentrate and keep me calm and determined. In her article Lipman’s states, “Robert Taub said when he performs, he can “visualize all of the notes and their interrelationships,” a skill that translates intellectually into making “multiple connections in multiple spheres.”” As I worked on the robot costume, I’d play music and was able to imagine the pieces I’d need from household appliances and the process to create the costume. Listening to music has really kept me patient and determined to accomplish my goals.
Music has also helped me to achieve my academic goals. I love classical music, and orchestra. Orchestra helps me get into deep thought. I often play it when I am studying. As a student, I sometimes struggle to focus but when I play orchestra music I have no problem. I am able to retain knowledge and understand the material. The music drowns out the outside noise or outside thoughts.
I cannot support the article by stating that I am more successful in life because I played or play an instrument. However I can say that music has impacted my life significantly. Music is definitely a resource and tool for me to accomplish my goals. Music helps me to create, focus, and achieve while keeping me calm and determined.

  12. Music may very well be the key to success. I use music for just about everything. When it’s time to go to the gym, I always like to pick a fast pace song to amp my up before my workout. Music can even be used to help people concentrate. When I was in elementary, one of my teachers always played classical music at a low volume while the class did their work because she said that would help us clam down and concentrate. Although I may not play classical music, I always have music playing while I am studying or doing my homework because it gets me in the zone. Music can be peaceful and we all need peace in our lives. There have been times when I felt really stressed and I played my favorite song to forget about my problems. Songs can be used to express feelings. I went to a wedding and the groom played a song that talked about love experiences and the bride liked the song so much the she started crying. If music has the power to control our emotions, why wouldn’t music be able to influence our rate of success? There are songs that speak on the limit of success being beyond the sky. I am certain that many of the bread winners of the United States have heard a song that has motivated them to do something positive in their lives. Also, music allows people to express themselves. Would the world without music be a land full of unimaginative people with close to no differences? Well, luckily that question doesn’t have to be answered because music is a wonderful feature that is present in ours lives.

  13. This article makes a great effort in dropping names of wealthy individuals who have played or still play a musical instrument. However, to me success isn't counted in the amount of money or recognition you achieve but by the impact you leave on this earth. Through personal experience I've learned that music is a journey that takes courage, patience, confidence, and above all passion.

Picking up an instrument is a scary thing to do. What if you aren't good at it? What if you'll never be good enough? These are the questions every aspiring musician faces. As soon as the individual has the courage to pick up an instrument it truly takes patience to continue the learning process especially through frustrations. Once practice upon practice makes a noticeable difference confidence is born.

The technical aspects such as the addition of counts, the subdivision in a beat, or the time signature, as well as, the color and movement aspects such as crescendos, and diminuendos, which add color and movement to the piece all make for a great musician. However, without passion music is nothing. It takes passion to play a piece with feeling and emotion. It creates a sensation that I know every musician has felt. This is why I believe musicians are successful in life. If they have passion for an inanimate object that brings them happiness, all the more for the life they live.

  14. After reading the passage, I think of music much differently. After reading about the owners, founders, and profiters of major companies, and their experiences with music, I think music is a big key to success. It teaches patience, handwork, dedication, creativity, listening skills, etc. Those components make up a dilligent leader and person in general. The skill that music teaches is how to be able to be creative but also professional. Music teaches leadership skills and skills in subordination. Music is then a good way to prepare for your future because all the skills listed in the article are useful in the workforce, at school, or any position.. I don't believe that music is the sole key to success. Music to those individuals changed their lives whether intended or not. I don't believe it is a coincidence that these influential individuals all played music instruments. Music teaches discipline, discipline that makes a great individual.

  15. Music can hold the key to success. However, the idea that sending child to music school will make him or her next Woody Allen. The likelihood of this happening is small as the post suggest. It does suggest that many people are successful that do play an instruments. Some of the people who played in school have helped them become famous for invention in their career. By playing instruments t it helps develops another side of their thinking. A lot of people do make a connection to something personal in their life. Some people do hear music depending on their moods on what they listen too. To be able to perform live it does take talent and confidence. Music has helped many people developed their unhidden talent. Also, music is a way for people to make a connection with their culture. Just to be successful that something it takes time and practice to become at one thing. Another way is music, is a good discipline for students because they always if they want to become good. Music has helped people to become focus on their goals for themselves. Music develops a new way of thinking and creative.

  16. Music has had a slightly negative effect on my life. While I do enjoy listening to certain types of music, genres such as rap, country and whatever else there is playing on the radio always makes me feel angry. Not sure why that is, but I believe it might have started when I got annoyed being in the school band. I was part of the school band in middle school and high school. I played the saxophone for about six years and after graduating from high school I stopped playing. That was the best day of my life because I knew that I will never have to remember the scales or tempos or whatever else is involved that I can’t remember. Those six years were the worst six years of my life. What I hated the most was playing for concerts and football games. The games were at night and it sometimes got cold. The worst part of it was wearing those horrible uniforms and how bored I was during the games since I don’t like football. We also had to memorize the scales for our exams, and I was awful at remembering the scales. Six years may not be a long time but that is twenty-four percent of my life wasted on something that I did not enjoy. So why did I stay? I have no idea why, I just did.

  17. After reading this article about music, I came to a conclusion that, in fact, music does play an important role in the development of your creativeness. Few celebrities shared their personal experiences with music and the affect that it caused them. As of today, music still has a huge impact on humanity, it helps us to visualize the beauty of nature. For example, whenever I’m doing my homework I listen to music, especially classical because it has a soft rhythm and it is easier for me to think on interesting ideas to write about. Like Wolfensohn said, “There’s nothing like music to teach you that eventually if you work hard enough, it does get better. You see the results.” Music is something that you have to practice if you want to be better. It is a problem solving that can distract you from any problem that you might have. It allows your mind to think deeply and to reconsider any decisions, nor could it help you to lean back on a sofa and simply relax. Top musicians have had enormous accomplishments due to music because that’s what music is all about, it gives you the opportunity to use your creativity. Discipline is also a technique that is accomplish by playing music, it allows you to listen carefully to the notes and it helps you to have a better listening skills too. Therefore, music plays and important role in creativeness and discipline. It makes you more knowledgably because in order to understand music, you have to pay attention very carefully to its lyrics. Music makes me think of a better and peaceful life for all humanity. There is no barriers in music, it is a universal thing that everyone can enjoy without any situation. So, yes, music is the key to success..

  18. Music has always had a way of impacting many aspects of our lives. When the argument that music is the key to success is made, I tend to listen, especially when there are large amounts of data supporting the theory. It’s been shown that people who are successful are also musically talented and their success can be tied to their musical experiences beginning in their adolescence. Music has the ability to open minds and enhance our creativity and intelligence. It can help create new ideas that not only help develop the musical side, but the main passage of oneself. Although I myself don’t regularly play an instrument, I did play in my high school band and I can relate to the positive effects learning an instrument can have on a person’s discipline and the creativity one needs to excel in a career that demands it.

  19. There are various factors which lead an individual to achieve success. From a sociological standpoint these factors include one’s status, wealth and prestige. The idea is those who have means are at an advantage in achieving economic success. But not all success can be measured monetarily, the success described in the article, “Is Music the Key to Success,” describes, of course, individuals with economic success, but also reveals a different type of wealth gained by playing an instrument. The article depicts music as a sort of gateway to achieving success. For many years, those in the art community have been pushing the importance of music in public schools across the Country and for very good reason; they understand the important of making music. And although there is not much background knowledge of the person’s depicted in the article, it seems plausible that music deeply impacted and aided to the success of the individuals presented. Music may not be the “Key to success,” but it seems to be of great importance in allowing the mind to express ingenuity while also adding structure and critical thinking skills.

  20. I believe music isn’t the key to success, but it can be a tool that helps you reach success. To be successful I believe you need to be determined, motivated, and organized. In the article, most people that the author talked to said that music helped them become successful. Music helped their creativity and helped them connect ideas they had. Personally, music impacts my life every day. I listen to music for many reason. After a long day I turn on my Spotify music list and it helps me relax. Also when I’m driving in my car music helps me deal with all the crazy drives on the road. If I didn’t have music playing in my car while driving I would lose it. However, the greatest way music impacts my life is while doing homework or anything related to school. It’s a must for music to be playing while I’m doing homework because it helps me concentrate. Music helps me concentrate because it blocks the surrounding noise from disrupting me. It also helps me expand my critical thinking while doing homework.

  21. Music has greatly impacted my life. I like to listen to a lot of different types of music and I feel like it makes me appreciate more about different types of people and cultures. I love to listen to Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole and I think it is great that I can connect on a level with elder people because not a lot of people my age know of their music. At one minute I can be listening to a radio station that plays Pearl Jam, BB King, and Sting and the next I can listen to country or r&b. I also feel like music can influence me more on an emotional level. If I am sad I may listen to Adelle, or if I am happy I may listen to TLC. Depending on how I am feeling will depend on the type of music I listen to. My music choice may also be influenced but the emotions that I want to have. If I am sad and I do not want to be I will put happy music on to cheer me up.

  22. I do believe that music is the key to success. I started playing the flute ten years ago, and have since learned the saxophone and oboe, and it has enormously impacted my education and life in a positive way. Playing an instrument opens your mind to understanding other ways of thinking. First of all, being able to read music is just like learning another language. It takes a lot of hard work and time to be able to fluently read music at a professional level. Music teaches you time and dedication. You do not have to be a good musician to take anything positive from it. It also provides you with confidence to try more difficult tasks. I do not think I would have taken advanced placement classes in high school if it was not for being in band, because it gave me the confidence to try and succeed in harder courses. One of the best things I could have learned from being in band, would be the ability to work in a group. Being a part of something bigger than yourself if probably the best feeling, and being just one piece of an intricate machine working towards the same goal is something I believe everyone should experience to be more successful in life.

  23. Music has had a big impacted in my life. Every since I can remember I liked sounds of music like jazz and the blues. My mom heard a lot of that kind of music so I think that’s why I started to hear that kind of music. But over the years I started to like hearing rock, oldies, Spanish, jazz, blues, opera, and the list goes on. I remember when I was younger I fell in love with a song called ‘angle baby’ by Rosie and the originals. This song triggers my heart to feel at peace. When I feel alone I play the song over and over again. It’s a great memory that I have about my mother. After she passed away i would play the song to make me feel better. It was a safe place for me. When I lose her music become a peaceful place for me to hide and feel a life again even if it was for a while. And now I have so much love for music that has meaning and soul. Which is very hard to find now a days.

  24. Music has impacted my life by giving me an outlet to express my emotions. I could be going through a range of emotions and music will always help me understand those feelings with a song. It is a way I have always made sense of the struggles I have been through. Instead of playing upbeat and happy songs when I am in a down mood, I will listen to songs that express the feelings I am going through. If I’m feeling down I will listen to a sad song, go through the emotions, get over it and it always helps me feel better. Music has also helped me see different perspectives and it has taught me many things. I come from a musically talented family so I would say that I was born with a love of music. I played the trumpet growing up and it was my escape from everything. The art of music taught me early on that being passionate about something and having your own hobbies and goals is important in life.

  25. I feel like in some cases music really impacts the experience I have in life. There have been many times where I have been sad, and music has really uplifted my life. For example, if I am really sad I would try to listen to something upbeat and something that makes me smile. But when I am extremely happy I try to not listen to depressing low beat music. The reason for that is because I do not want to get in the low state of mind. And I also do not want to go into a deep depression. When I am in a deep depression, I am in depression for a really long time. I am a Christian and there have been many times where I would listen to a Christian song that would really give me hope for the future, that would really lighten up my day. Some of the songs that I really like to listen to our actually Christian songs. The reason for that, is because when I do listen to Christian music my heart jumps for joy and I know that someone is there standing right next to me. There also have been songs where I knew that by listening to this I know that I'm going to be alright, and that whatever I'm going through is just a small fraction of what an amazing journey and experience I'm going to have in the future. When I do listen to music, I think more about what I'm going to be doing in the future especially songs about love and romance. Those types of songs help me to realize that one day I will find true love and that when I do it's going to be a joyful experience. Music really transforms my life every time I listen to it. That is why I have to be really careful on what type of music I listen to. The reason is because I love to daydream and I want positive music going into me that having negative music going into me.

  26. Ever since I can remember music has been a big part of my life. Music has gotten me through many tough times even at a young age. Music allows me to express myself when I can not even begin to find the words myself. I spend hours a day listening and singing music from different types of genres. Ever since I was little music has always been like medicine for me. Whenever I am stressed, sick, or unable to express myself I end up listening to music for several hours. When I am sick or sad I always listen to music and almost instantly I don't feel so sick as before and I cheer up as well. Music has always helped me understand my emotions and get through times where I felt alone. Music also cheers me up because when ever I am shy or scared I listen to music that encourages me and gives me the confidence I need to continue. Music has especially helped me so much throughout my college years because every time I have midterms and finals I always listen to music so I could relax and be in peace for a few minutes. Not only does listening to music help me a lot but so does singing and dancing to it as well. Almost every time the radio is on I am always singing and dancing along to it. Singing and dancing to music helps me to just relax and not worry about things. It reminds me to slow down and enjoy the moment. Music will always have a big part in my life and I know I can count on music to get me through things and help express myself even when I'm at a loss of words.

  27. I don’t think music is technically the key to success. I would consider and place music to be more of a part or piece of success only because one allows music to be part of success. I believe the key can be anything in the world that a particular person may choose it to be. Therefore, music isn’t the key to success for every single person; the key to success is anything one wishes it to be. As far as for me, I like to believe that the key to my success is love and my beautiful family. For they are the ones who have and will always be around for me no matter the circumstances. Although music has been a part of me since I can remember, it has also helped me get closer to my sisters and father. Despite our differences between five different personalities, we can always relate to the similar Spanish music we were raised listening to. Music has been a big part of my life but it hasn’t necessarily been the key point of my success. Music only becomes important in a person’s life because they are the ones who allow it. There has been particular points in my life that music has changed and/or benefited my life decisions but personally to me, movies and shows have impacted my view of life more. Maybe it is bias of me to feel this way since I am a visual learner but don’t be mistaken; music still impacts my life experiences for the better.
