BASICS OF THE COURSE EACH WEEK

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK FOUR BLOG ENTRY

Answer one of the following questions in your blog entry this week:

1. What is the greatest single song of all time and why?

2. Do you have a memory that is directly linked to a song?
For example, you are on your first date and the Katy Perry song Dark Horse plays on the radio three separate times during the evening. So now whenever you think of the date, you are reminded of the song, and vice versa.

  1. It is difficult to name the greatest single song of all time because different genres and songs can appeal to us at different moments of our lives. For me, it depends on what I am experiencing during that time period of my life that allows me to connect with certain songs. Having said that, I can narrow it down to two songs. “Imagine” by John Lennon is an amazing song because it has a beautiful message and I love the piano. I feel that music with meaningful lyrics, such as this, are lacking today. If I need to clear my head, this song will set me to ease. On that note, my second favorite is “Sure Thing” by the artist who goes by Miguel. This song is no more than a love song, but the beat makes me want to bust out a solo dance performance. It puts me in a good mood and I can listen to it over and over again without getting sick of it.

One song that takes me back to the past is “I’m Sprung” by T-pain. It is kind of a funny song because it’s a little cheesy. Every Saturday I would have to do chores and this song always came on the radio. It would make the time go by faster. I hate cleaning, but this song brings me back to being ten years old and things seemed much simpler looking back at that point in my life. However, I would never trade now for then.

    1. I have to agree that a lot of songs that come out on the market now are just about five to seven lines that are repeated a few times while mainly relying on the beat to carry the whole thing. Older songs do tend to have more of a message and some even seem to tell a story. I miss it as well.

    2. I chose "Imagine" as well. It is such a strong and moving song; it gives me so much hope. "Sure Thing" is my absolute favorite love song as well!

    3. I also agree that the time and period of your life have a great impact on the music that moves you or that you will gravitate toward, this would be why many songs are hard to put as the top songs because every song that has had an impact on you will change your perspective of it.

    4. That's a funny song to do chores too but I admit although it is cheesy like you said it was extremely catchy as well. Yes, I agree life was a bit more easier back then but part of life is growing and it leaves us with wonderful memories and songs to go along with it.

    5. I have heard the song "Sure Thing" I actually didn't know it was by Miguel. It is a nice song and although I wouldn't bust out a solo dance performance, I do think it is nice romantic song.

    6. I also agree, songs do trigger memories and take you back to the past. The song “Every Step” by the Police, reminds me of when I was younger. Some songs from the past, no matter how old, have a way of influencing your mood and attitude.

    7. I think that music really does influence our emotions and mood In a big way. I think it does have to do with our past and what we have gone thought in life.

  2. There are so many songs that I like and depending in the mood that I’m in, that’s that I will listen to. However, if I have to, If I absolutely must have to choose one, it would be “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by Rod Stewart. I just like it. I do not know if it is the beat of the soul he sings it with or maybe it is a combination of both but I just like it. I could play this song anytime during the day: in the morning showering, while I do chores, while I fix my car, or even right before I go to bed. This song can be played in any mood that I am in: angry, mad , upset or just plain happy. If I have to say that my single song, best song of all time, it would have to be “Have you ever seen the rain.” Just like in the example the Dr. gave us, I have played that song during dates I have gone to and if she doesn’t like that song, that it just simply means we do not have the same taste in music. It may or it may not be a deal breaker but it is better when we have the same taste in music, plus who wouldn’t like this song. It is the best single song of all time.

I just loved your post! I also loves songs that I can listen to anytime of the day and when I'm in any mood. That is when you can really enjoy music. I have never heard your favorite song before, but maybe I will listen to it. Thanks for the post! Have a great night!

  3. I think finding an answer to this question is harder than answering a political question. It is difficult for me to choose only one favorite song. After a moment of digging through my all time favorite anthems, I would say that Cyndi Lauper's "The Goonies R Good Enough" has to be up on my list. Not only is this part of the soundtrack to one of the greatest movies ever made, it gives me the most positive mindset. "Good enough for you is good enough for me" is a motto that I think everyone should live by. Over the years, I've learned to accept everyone for who he or she is, and if my friends, brother, sister, etc wants to do something that make him or her happy, then I should accept it and let them be. I think that's important for any relationship you have with someone. My younger sister and I used to watch The Goonies a lot, and she would always sing this song at the top of her lungs (along with other Cyndi Lauper songs), and every time I hear this song or Cyndi Lauper I think of my sister. We are in our early 20s now and don't hang out a lot anymore. So, this reminds me that my sister and I will always be there for one another despite how busy we are. Also, we both share a love for the 80s, and this song reminds me of the few we have in common.

    1. It sounds like you have a really open mindset. A lot of people think music defines who they are, but music is just a small aspect to that. Good post.

    2. Its awesome when a song can evoke more then just feelings but a different mindset in a person. It shows how strong music really is. Now if only politicians could listen to some Lennon or Bob Dylan this world would be a lot better place.

    3. I agree that is awesome and also reminds me of "The Goonies". I remember watching that movie many times. My favorite character is Sloth. I even played The Goonies video games for Nintendo. Good choice with Cyndi Lauper.

  4. I can’t possibly decide on one song as the single greatest song of all time, yet… maybe in 10 years or so I'll have an answer to that. But I do have a song which comes to mind that reminds me of a particular event from high school. I don't miss much from those four years, but running cross country is one thing that certainly do. On the morning of November 27, 2010 my team and I were heading to the State Championship meet in Clovis. As my team and I got off the bus and headed towards our warm up area, the song “With Me” by Sum 41 was playing on my iPod. Now, I’m positive that the lead vocalist of the band intended this song to be dedicated to a girl he admired, but a couple of lines from the chorus such as: “With everything I won’t let this go. These words are my heart and soul. I’ll hold on to this moment, you know…” really epitomized what being at that meet that day meant to me and my teammates. The varsity team consists of seven runners, and the other six guys that were there with me that day had been on the team together since our freshman year. All seven of had trained with each other since our first practice four years prior to that day. We had gone from being last in our league, to valley champions and state medal contenders in just a few years’ time. Every time I hear the song it really does bring back memories of that day, and now that I’m a coach myself, I can’t help but play that song when I get up in the morning on race days!

  5. I believe that the single greatest single song of all time, for me at least, would have to be “Imagine” by John Lennon. The lyrics itself convey such hope for peace in the world. It reveals that though it may be a preposterous idea to think that complete peace could happen, however it cannot hurt to have hope. It makes me become a dreamer, thinking what a world like that could mean for people. Lennon`s hope is for us to reside in a world where we work together as one, rather than discriminate and hate others just because they have other beliefs. He asks us to imagine a world where we set aside our differences in order share this exquisite planet that we call Earth. His lyrics express the hope to live in a world where no one is suffering, everyone is selfless, and there is nothing worth hurting others for. When he says, “imagine”, I really do imagine a life just like his song entails. This song embodies peace for me; I love listening to it when I question what the world has come to because of the elevated violence in communities around me and all around the world. Violence occurs far too often and it saddens me to think how cruel we can be to one another. This song gives me the hope that I need for myself when times are rough and I hope that it does the same for others as well.

  7. A song that my ex said described me was the Katy Perry song Hot N Cold. I remember we were driving and once the song came on he had mentioned that this song was dedicated to me because I guess my emotions are like the song, one moment hot and one moment cold. Well of course this infuriated me, it would anyone, but I realize I wasn’t the bad one, he was. With him being my first boyfriend, I was very lenient in many things that I shouldn’t have been, because I wanted to make him happy. This was a big mistake that I know now to not let pass. I may be justifying myself on not being the one to blame, I know I was at times hot and cold emotionally, but through that relationship I know what I like and don’t like and will not put up with the dislikes to make the other person happy, when they truly know they are in the wrong.
I just dislike that this song is a reminder now every time I hear it. It makes me unhappy that I let someone affect my life in such a way that a song frustrates me, but I have been slowly getting over this issue because I have found a much better man in my life who treats me well and who takes my dislikes into consideration, just like I do with his. He is my fiancé and I will enjoy my life with him to the fullest. It’s just ironic that my name is Katie and his last name is Perry, so I will in fact be Katie Perry.

That is great that you have found someone and have been able to get over that time in your life. I enjoyed reading your post and found it interesting that you chose a song that you don’t like and your reasons why. Next time you hear that song maybe you should view it differently and be happy that you were able to get out of an unhappy relationship and you now have someone that you are happy with.

  8. I can't tell whether question 1 is about the greatest song of all time in the whole world or if its about the greatest song to you. Either way it would be very hard to answer the question seeing as there are hundreds of songs in existence and it would take a fairly long time to pile all the information on it to give a straight answer. I was able to narrow it down to one song eventually, but it was a very hard decision for me, the song I chose is only because the other one isn’t in English. The song is "Lullaby" by Assemblage 23; its greatness is due to the fact that the song manages to pull so many emotions out of me when I hear it, such as: fear, hope, sorrow, joy, and peace. An odd mix of emotions I know, but they're there. I’d been introduced to the band by a friend I’d made online through a videogame, whose name I can sadly no longer remember, at the time he’d been stationed as a naval officer in Hawaii after being stationed in Japan for a long time. He’d had to leave his cat behind and was pretty upset about it. I also remember him divulging the fact that he was gay and hadn’t told anyone there that he was friends with. It somehow became a bonding moment for the two of use since he could confide in me and I was very impressionable given that I was seventeen. It’s a good memory, but one that’s made me sad considering I fell out of touch with a friend.

  9. The greatest single song of all time is the song all mother or grandmothers sing to put their babies at ease. That single song that traditionally has been passed down from generation to generation. A culture woven tune that transcends time. The song sung by the mother to a child with love, protection, compassion, and warmth. We all know it, we all know how that tune is sung or hummed. It's deep down in our souls. It is that memory of our mothers touch, our mothers hugs, our mothers presence letting us know we are safe and loved. There comes a moment in our stressful lives that we struggle to overcome our hurdles; however, a simple thought, a memory of a soothing song that can only bring smiles and washes our troubles away. Why is this song the greatest single song ever? It's because its the song that we will never forget. It's the song we sing to our children today with the silent understanding where it comes from and what it means. We will never forget.

  10. A particular song that brings back memories every time I hear it is a song called “Lie to me” by Ne-Yo, but this song doesn’t only bring back memories of my past experience. It also reminds me of a particular person that I never thought would be part of my life again. I have known this individual since I was in 7th grade and after not speaking for over 6 years, we have become the best friends one can ever wish for. Although this particular song doesn’t bring me the best memories, it reminds me of how I have to be stronger and fight through the punches life throws at me. This particular song also reminds me of how no one is perfect but one does have the ability to choose for better. Although this isn’t the best song to fit the particular memory it was the song that played over and over right before hearing special words of wisdom that brought me up once again. So now every time I’m feeling down I hear this song and remember there’s no reason to lie, I must get up and get over whatever the situation maybe because I am better than that.

  11. "The greatest song of all time" had me stumped for two days and then I started thinking of the other question. I do have a song directly linked to my memory. As a matter of fact, I had a lot of songs directly linked to memory. The one that stood out the most from my memory would have to be Kool and The Gang- Get Down On It. The reason this song is in my memory is because when I was younger I had trouble sleeping. So, my dad would put me in his red truck and we would go for long drives to put me to sleep. Of course, there would be other songs that where playing and it wasn't just the music that made this significant. The time that I got to spend with my dad with no worries and the window down to let the wind blow in my face which I still like to do. The best cure for having trouble sleeping would have to be going to the Army. They teach you unintentionally how to sleep without a care in the world because you don't know when you will get sleep the next time. Now when I'm tired and if I lay down I'm usually asleep within five minutes.

  12. A couples of year ago, well more than a couple, I was 21 years old, kid free, and living the single life. At the time my favorite music was rock, punk, alternative and R&B. I remember one evening sitting at the bar with some of my friends and a handsome young man approached me and asked if I wanted a beer. I refused because of my strict diet of course, but I did agree to dance with him. We danced a few songs became comfortable with one another and then he told me I had something on my face. Before I could say, "What," he had planted a sweet kiss on my cheek. I was taken by surprise but after seeing his uneasy smile I too smiled and laughed. Yes it was super cheesy but after that night we were inseparable and I could truly say he was my first love. Many times we would fight over what to listen to on the radio. We would go back and forth before stations and I would roll my eyes when he would play Spanish music, Oldies and Old School music. But after many nights of watching his well thought out choreographed dance moves, while playing the old school hit song, Erotic City by the one and only Prince, I too became a fan of the song. He and I unfortunately had to go our separate ways but till this day, I cannot stay off the dance floor when I hear this song. I mimic the dance moves I was taught and I absolutely love the song and all the wonderful memories it brings.

  13. I personally don’t have a favorite song at this time. Although I do listen to country music because it is the only music that talks about things that had happened or it has something to do with nature. Country music is very enjoyable and it makes me think of my future and my goals that I have to achieve. Garth Brooks has a lot of good songs that I listen to especially the song called “The River” it has a smooth rhythm and it allows me to think clearly and make smart decisions. Do not get me wrong, I do like other types of music but is just that music of today talk’s nonsense in mostly everything. On the other hand, country music takes you to an imaginary world where you can let your mind be free for a while. I’ve been listening to Garth Brooks for years and his music never gets old for me. A lot of memories from the past come alive every time I listen to country music. Memories from my past experiences are most common, and it is great to remember them while listening to country music. Imagine listening to country music next to your girlfriend laying down in the middle of nowhere just you and her. Music is what pushes us to become more emotional with others around us. I listen to country music everyday especially when I’m at work, it relaxes me. Lastly, listening to country music opens your heart to expressions and emotions.

  14. The one song that evokes memories is Radioactive by the Imagine Dragons. Although this song has a likable style and sound, to me it brings me back to friendships that I may never experience in again. I spent one summer with individuals from other countries and we all developed a strong bond with each other. We were all participating in an internship and hadn’t any friends. Over time living with them; we all enjoyed new adventures together, we struggled together, we argued with each other, we began to understand one another, and we enjoyed each other. During our summer internship we took many photos and videos of our adventures. Coincidentally, Radioactive happened to be on the radio all of the time. We all compiled our photos and video and created one long YouTube video with the song Radioactive playing in the background. Then our good times had to come to an end. It was a bittersweet to say goodbye, and all we have to communicate now is technology. Our friendships seemed short lived but we try to maintain communication. It was just a cool song at the time, but for me it now reminds me of a previous time.
My family at times gets tired of hearing the song, but still lets me enjoy it. All of the memories replay in my head. It makes me smile, and sad at the same time. I think everyone has one of these songs at one point in their life. It’s not the always about the song. It’s usually about the memory it triggers.

I think it debuted in summer of 2013. My husband had just left for Basic Combat Training for the Army and this song would always be playing on my radio or Pandora station! At first when I would hear this song come on, I would get sad because I would be reminded about my husband being gone and joining the military, but once I started belting out those high note of Ms. Underwood I get reminded that I will definitely be seeing my husband again. I also remember listening to this song the night before seeing my husband graduate from training in the Las Vegas airport. I was so excited to see him but still sad that I didn’t have him with me and just started crying in the middle of the airport! Still when I hear this song, I get emotional while my loved one is stationed in another state, but it is one that I will always love and will always have a huge significant meaning to me.

  16. One memory that is directly linked to a song includes me visiting a roller skating rink when I was younger. The song that is directly linked to that roller skating rink is "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell. Surprisingly, when I was younger I visited the skating rink on many occasions. Sometimes I would go the skating rink for a birthday party. Most of the times I went to the skating rink around Christmas, thanks to my orthodontist. Dr. Snow always rented out the roller skating rink for all of his patients and their family. The reason why "Tainted Love" is a song that is linked to my memory is because you couldn't visit that roller skating rink without hearing that song at least twice. After visiting the roller rink a few times it was easy to point out that the songs that they played were on one tape. The roller skating rink claimed that they played songs on request but there is no way that anyone could love to skate in circles to that song more than one time a night. I felt that my roller skating rink experience was not complete until I heard that song play at least two times. "Tainted Love" reminds me of roller skates, a disco ball, red vine licorice, an old Dr. Snow that loved to skate, and falling down repeatedly on a wooden floor.

  17. I don't think there is a single greatest song because the list is endless when you're an audiophile like me. However, if I had to choose one for the sake of this blog, "Depth Over Distance" by Ben Howard comes to mind. As much as I don't admit it I am a hopeless romantic and this bleeds out into most of the music I listen to. In true fashion this song to me translates into a relationship that is being tested by physical distance, as well as, to embrace the time you have with someone or something different that may or may not be there for the long run. In the second verse Ben says, "there's strength in the blindness you fear" which speaks volumes to me. He reiterated the fact that jumping into a relationship is the most difficult part. We are blinded by the negative thoughts and hindrances that prevent us from loving each other. However, if we build up the strength to break down this wall we find that the fear we have is minuscule compared to the relationship we have with our significant other. I also feel like this song touches on the subject that the depth between two people means more then the time they've been together. To me the most beautiful relationships can sometimes be short and sweet, rather then a relationship that is only afloat for the sake of being with eachother over a long period of time. This song is great to me because it has a deeper meaning that makes me think about the love I want to have one day with someone who appreciates the depth just as much as I do.

Everyday after school when I was thirteen I would religiously watch MTV. As I turned on the television a new artist by the name of Avril Lavigne was making her debut video. with "Sk8ter Boi" and I remember every detail about that music video. The clothes she wore, the skate park she was at, and the song itself, everything about it was amazing to me. After listening to it one time on MTV I couldn't get enough. My older sister bought the album a month later and we listened to it on repeat for days upon end. To this day I know about every word to every song on that album. Sometimes I wish I could memorize school terms and vocabulary like I do lyrics then I'd be a genius! Avril Lavigne was the anthem to my pre-teen years and although I'm not a huge fan of her music now, I'll always remember that day after school.

    2. You guys listened to the same album for days? That would have driven me insane. And what is this bone dance the Beau is taking about? I don't want to look it up for the fear of seeing things that can't be unseen.

  18. I don’t really like to listen to songs. My brother likes to listen to genres of music and have heard of different themes to the artist’s songs. I have noticed that many artists sing about the same things like an ex boyfriend or girlfriend or about someone they wish they can be with or about things they like. Sometimes I don’t understand what the song is about and I do not want to get started on rap. This is why I don’t like to listen to songs. But I do enjoy listening to music from different video games. The music from the games Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda reminds me a lot about when I used to play this game when I was a kid.
As strange as it sounds, I have almost no memory from when I was a kid. But hearing the level select theme from Super Mario World always makes me smile. I would remember being happy when I played this game for the first time and happy memories playing with my brother. The music from The Legend of Zelda always makes me feel like I am on a grand adventure. The music from these two games makes me feel great. My phone has a lot of the themes from The Legend of Zelda series and personalized ringtones. I used to listen to songs from different artists, but they never really stayed with me for a long time and are just wasting hard drive space.

  19. The song that I connected with is “Break Free” by Ariana Grande. This song empowered me to break up with my fiancé. I just could not take it anymore being told lies day after day. One day listening to the song, the song spoke to me, especially the part, where she says “Don’t wanna hear your lie tonight now that I’ve become who I really am.” I got tired of hearing the same story every day. He would say he is looking for better job, but he was not. However, I was the one looking for a better job, and I found one at a school. This job is in the field which I plan to go into, and it opened my eyes that I could do better for myself. The chorus of the song “this is the part where I can’t resist it no more”, I related to this, because I just could not allow myself to be in this relationship anymore. He just had one job part time making only minimum wage, while I was working two jobs and going to school full time. My ex had the nerve to just laugh and verbal abuse me by making fun of my jobs and classes that I was taking. He repeatedly put me down that I was not good enough to tutor kids at the school. Also, he would not support me in school because I take time doing my homework and not spending that time with him. As a result, I could take it anymore just like the lyrics in the song. Furthermore, this song spoke to me because it states “take it I don’t want it anymore.” I gave him back all of his stuff including the diamond ring. I relate my break up to experience to the lyrics “I am stronger than I have been” because this is the part where: I break free.” So, this song has not only empowered me to break free from him, but it helped me cut all contact with him.

    1. It's amazing how songs have the power to help us make decisions. Especially important decisions.

    2. I'm glad this song helped you get rid of dead weight that was dragging you down. Songs can be very empowering.

    3. I love this song as well. I am always singing it all the time. This song also reminds me to stand up for myself and to do what I want to do not what others want me to do. I'm glad this song helped you realize that you deserve better than him.

    4. I think those are the best songs that make you feel stronger and more confident in yourself and your decisions. Sometimes we need something to push us to make the decisions that are hard but the best thing for us, and I am glad this song was able to do that for you.

  20. When I was younger I spent a lot of time at my grandma’s house and I would have a hard time sleeping. My grandma is a huge Sean Connery fan and there was usually a Sean Connery movie on. One day, when I was having a particularly hard time sleeping, she was watching the Medicine Man. When the music started playing to the intro, Rae’s Arrival by Jerry Goldsmith, I fell asleep right away. So from then on whenever I had a hard time going to sleep my grandma would play that song on repeat to help put me to sleep. Now whenever I hear that song I always think about my grandma. Sometimes when I am really stressed I play that song to calm myself down. Now that I am older it does not put me to sleep like it use to, but I still sometimes play it when I cannot sleep because it does still calm me if my my mind is racing. I do not know if it calms me because it is just a calming song or if it is from the memories and associations I have with it calming me enough to put me to sleep as a child. I love this song, it is cheery and beautiful, and I think it is a big part of the reason why I started playing the flute because of the beautiful flute feature throughout the song. It was my first impression of classical music and it has really touched my life in a significant way.

  21. One memory directly linked to a song is the first time I hung out with my current boyfriend. As I pulled up to his house, I was humming the song "One in a Lifetime" by Monica. We were both standing outside of his house and talking about how my first day of CSUB went. I explained how my day turned out. About an hour and a half passed, and he went to get something from his car. He came back singing the same tune that I was humming when I arrived. I couldn't help but smile, so he asked what was so funny. I told him that I had that song in my head when I arrived.. Ten minutes later, his mom stopped by for a visit. When she opened the door to her car, we heard the same song playing. That day we jokingly said that "One in a Lifetime" would be our song. To this day, four years later, that is still our song.

  22. It’s kind of hard to pick one song as the greatest of all time. Growing in a Spanish speaking household, I was exposed to music in both English and Spanish. There are great songs in both languages that can be considered to be the greatest song. However, having to choose one song I would have to say that “La Macarena” by Los Del Rio is the greatest. I say it’s the greatest because this song was very popular even though it was in Spanish. I remember it was popular mostly at gatherings or parties because there was a certain way people would dance to the song.
I have a memory that is directly linked to “I believe I Can fly” by R Kelly. I remember having to sing the song for my elementary graduation. I can still picture myself on stage getting ready to sing. I also remember being obsessed with the song “I Believe I Can Fly” that I would listen to the song over and over all day long. I still listen to it, but not like back when I was in Elementary school and Jr high. This song brings me memories of living in Los Angeles as a young child right before moving to Bakersfield.

    1. Hey Raul,
I always really liked La Macarena too! And R Kelly is just one singer that is really hard to beat, he makes such good music. That is great that you have a song that can connect you to the past.

  23. One song that I would consider the best of all time would be “Beautiful” by India Arie, because she is so empowering with her words. This song describes a person who is able to overcome all obstacles while living in a life that is free of all worries. India Arie has an earthly voice and she knows exactly how use her mellow tone to connect to her fans. When I think of the song “Beautiful” I think of how I overcame ruff times in my life. This song was recorded with an acoustic guitar, and the guitar sounds just as great as the vocals. Sometimes I listen to this song just to relax because it has a soothing instrumental and India Aries vocals completes the song by adding a warm tone to the song. Every time I hear India Aries singing, it makes me think about how I can achieve and goal that I set for myself. India Arie has plenty of awards for her music because she has managed to touch many different souls with her unique sound. After listening to India Aries song I can imagine myself as a bird flying over mountains and leaving everyday stress beneath me. Any song that can make a person’s day better and lift their spirit should be considered as a great song. I love music, but not many songs have the power to make me think about my life like “Beautiful” does. “”Beautiful” by India Arie is by far the best song for me because I connect with this song much more than I connect to any other songs.

  24. Thousands of songs have flooded my mind throughout my years as a child to now. Songs have always been able to change my moods and thoughts, so there have been songs that have been tied to specific periods in my life. Songs tied to both happiness and sadness. There is one particular song that comes to mind that has taken me back to a point in my life whenever I happen to hear it. “Stronger” by Kanye West was the ringtone during a time my ex-girlfriend and I was having relationship issues. It was the ringtone that I would hear every morning after sending me her morning text. It was the first sound I heard every day before waking up. It became such a pleasant sound that it was expected every morning, and when the day came where she wouldn’t set the sound off again, my mornings wouldn’t be the same. My mind tied that song to that time in my life and it wasn’t until after our time had passed that I realized that the song would be woven in to my mind. I would hear it everywhere I would go, and to this day it still takes me back when I hear even it’s faintest beats. It’s strange to think about how music has such an impact on our experiences and how our minds hold those experiences to take us back to those amazing, stressful, and depressing times in our lives. Experiences that no matter how great or painful, we would hate to be without.

  25. Trying to decide what song is my all time favorite is like going to a mall where everything is free but you're only allowed to pick one thing. Its almost impossible for me to decide. One of my favorites songs is called "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" by Selena. This song came out in the 90's but radio stations are still playing it to this day. The song is of course in Spanish but I know plenty of people who don't speak any Spanish at all and still love it. This is one of my favorite songs because I can relate to it a lot. Not only can I relate to it but the beat is very upbeat. Every time I hear it, no matter where I'm at, I always start dancing and singing along to it. Any time I am stressed or tired I just put the song on and instantly my day changes and I become stress free. Its a great song to play at parties especially if you want your guests to dance because it has an easy beat to dance to. Just like any song of Selena's, this song brings back all the memories from when all my childhood friends and I would spend hours a day trying to come up with dance routines and trying to do the "washer machine" which is one of Selena's signature dance moves. Another favorite song of mine is called "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt. I absolutely love this song. Its one of those song where every time it comes on I sing it at the top of my lungs. This song came out many years ago as well but for me this song never gets old. Both of these songs are songs that I am 100% sure that I will never get tired of. I know that I will always continue to listen to them even when I'm extremely old in my 90's.

    1. Hey Denise,
I love Selena!! I grew up on her songs and everytime I hear one I cannot help but to dance and sing along to it! She was just an amazing singer and I understand you when you say her music takes your stress away.

    2. Hi Denise,
I loved Selena growing up and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" was actually the first Selena song I ever heard. Through music Selena taught me some of the few Spanish words I do know. I like how she mixed English and Spanish to reach a wider audience.

  26. It’s very difficult to pick point a song that stands out as one of the greatest songs of all time because music moves us based on our emotions. Music can make us feel in control or it can control us. Let’s say you’re feeling vulnerable because you just had a break up and you turn on your car to go someplace and suddenly you hear the song ‘Back From The Dead’ by Skylar Grey. Which is a song about broken love and not knowing if you should try to work it out with your ex-lover, but it triggers all the memories of love and despair between the relationship. And so the music and lyrics combined work together to generate an emotion in one self. That is the power of music, it creates a spark in us that can lead us to act on our emotions.
Therefore it’s difficult to choose the greatest song of all times because that depends on the persons mental and emotional state. But personally I believe that this song is very great in its own way. The song being “Tristessa”, by Dutch. Which is an underground artist, from the UK. Throughout the song the artist is trying to communicate to its audience that the greatest sadness someone can endure is the loss of something precious, whether it being a person, an object, or anything that causes you to lose yourself due to the unbearable pain acknowledging that it has been lost for eternity. “Tristessa” influences you in a very sensitive way, which is why I think it makes it my number one song.

  27. This summer my best friend and I took a road trip up to Lake Havasu, Arizona. We stayed in a hotel but every day we were out on the lake boating, water skiing, and cliff jumping! Every night we went out to the clubs and danced the night away. The hotel that we were staying at had a club but it was not very busy. Instead we would go to the hotel across the bridge that had 3 pools, a dance floor and new DJs every three hours. At this club we had so much fun just drinking, spending time with friends and of course dancing. Every time I hear the song Don’t Tell ‘Em by Jeremih Feat. YG I think of this trip and I think of this club that we would go to. One night while we were there this gorgeous guy came up to me, and let me tell you he was tall, dark and handsome, and he challenged me to dance. We had a dance off to this song, in the end we just laughed and called it a tie. For the rest of the night the guy and I danced together. This trip was definitely one for the books, and now when I am driving around in my car and this song comes on the radio it has very happy times connected to it.

  28. The are so many different kinds of songs in the world that I really like. But right now my favorite song all of time would have to be "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran. He is by far one of my favorite artists. The way that he puts his lyrics together and then brings music together is just brilliant. One reason why I truly love this song is because the song is played in Lord of The Rings! All of the Lord of The Rings are amazing!! I have all of them in my movie library. And second reason why I really love this song is the way that Ed Sheeran sings his song. In the beginning of the song, the song starts off very Celtic. I love the sound of Celtic music. It always puts a smile on my face and I always have a warm feeling listening to that kind of music. So through out the song, Ed Sheeran hits certain notes that just make me melt. He is such an amazing singer. Lastly, the reason why I just love this song is because of the words that sung in the song. Through the words, the words tell a very good story. For me, the words are very powerful and the way that the words were put together was extremely smart. If you have watched The Hobbit that is along with The Lord of The Rings, would have to say that this song goes hand in hand with all of the movies. So this is my favorite song all of time.

  29. It is difficult for me to pick what I think is the greatest song of all time, because there are a handful of songs that I can relate to on a deep level. However, one song that would be at the top of my list of greatest songs is “If Tomorrow Never Comes” by Garth Brooks. Every time I hear that song it brings back memories of my childhood. My Dad would sing it to me when I was a little girl and he would tell me that the song perfectly describes his love for me. Whenever I feel sad or alone I will listen to that song and remember that I am loved and I will always have my Dads love. I am grown up now and have a family of my own, but whenever that song comes on I know that to him I will always be his little girl. My Dad even requested for it to be the song for our father/daughter dance at my upcoming wedding. Therefore, the song not only holds my childhood memories it will also hold memories I continue to make with my Father.
