BASICS OF THE COURSE EACH WEEK

These are time sensitive. You do not receive credit if you write them after the deadline each week. Furthermore, if you are in the habit of writing everything on Saturday you will not receive full credit. Why? There would be no time for others to interact with your writing. Write early; write often! Right? Right!

First, there's a blog entry (about 250 words) which will have you respond to a hopefully thought-provoking question. Each week, you must do the blog entry with enough time left in the week to be able to enter into dialogue online with your classmates. Write, reply, write more, reply more, and then write and reply more.

Second, there's a reading. There’s no blog entry associated with this. Just read.

Third, there's a written response to the reading. Your reading and writing on the blog must be completed by the SATURDAY (by midnight) of the week in which the reading falls. This entry should be a long paragraph. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESPOND TO OTHER STUDENTS' PART THREE EACH WEEK.

WEEK ONE BLOG ENTRY

(a reminder, in this section, you need to write your 250 word blog entry AND respond to two classmates. ALSO, THIS MUST BE COMPLETED DURING THE WEEK. IF YOU WAIT UNTIL SATURDAY, YOU WILL HAVE NO TIME TO INTERACT WITH CLASSMATES AND WILL AS SUCH NOT RECEIVE CREDIT. GET IN THE HABIT OF WRITING THE BLOG ENTRY EARLY!)

Introduce yourself to the class.
You might consider some of the following questions:
Where are you from?
What is your major?
Why are you taking an online course?
What is your favorite book?
What is your favorite food?
What is the farthest you have traveled from home?
What did you do over Winter Break?
Respond to any of these questions or anything else to tell us about yourself.

Return later in the week to reply to classmates.

  1. Hi everyone! My name is Amanda Alcala and I am from Lake Isabella, California. This Fall will be the start to my senior year and I couldn’t be more excited! I am a CAFS major and a PEAK minor. I am taking this online course because I absolutely love online courses. I feel like I am very successful at completing on line courses so I try to take as many as I can!
My favorite book is Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. I have loved it ever since the first time I read it in the fifth grade. Hands down, watermelon is my favorite food. I could eat it all day. The farthest that I have travelled from home is to New York. My husband and I took a road trip over summer and drove all the way there from Delano, California. Over Summer break I married the love of my life and got our home established at Fort Drum in New York. On our way there, we stopped in Kansas to spend time with some of his family members that he hasn’t seen in 12 years!
Besides that , I just took a couple on line classes and prepared myself for the Fall quarter. An interesting fact about me is that my husband is in the Army and after graduation this Spring, I’ll be moving to New York with him! I am also the Community Assistant for the Entwood resident hall on campus.

    1. Hi Amanda! You seem very excited to be taking this class and finishing up with school, but then again who isn't? I read Island of the Blue Dolphins when I was younger, unfortunately i don't remember much of it anymore.

Road trips are great aren't they? My sister went to New York and I still remember one of the only things she chose to divulge to me about it was how dirty the subway stations were. I think I laughed the whole time she told us the story since she's such an OCD cleaner at home. It's great that you got to see family as well, they seem to become more and more important as we age.

I hope your graduation comes quickly and your move to New York goes well. Good luck!!!

    3. Hi Amanda!
That is so exciting that you are starting your senior year! I hope that all of your classes go great this year. I have never read Island of the Blue Dolphin but maybe I will have to check it out. I went to New York when I was thirteen and I loved it! I have always wanted to go back and visit again! Congratulations on getting married this summer and good luck in New York!

  2. Amanda,
First post of the quarter, and it's a good one! You have had such a wealth of experiences. If you like books about the blue water, how about The Beach. The movie was not so good, but the book is a really good read!

  3. Thanks for the suggestion professor! I will definitely give this book a try.

  4. Hello fellow classmates! My name is Edwin Carter and I am from Moreno Valley, CA. This fall will be the beginning off my senior year, and I cannot wait for it to be over. I am a Business Psychology major who enjoys skateboarding, music and relaxing whenever I have free time. The reason I enrolled into an online course was to make my schedule more available to work. Luckily I managed to have classes only on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. This works because I am now working two jobs while being enrolled as a fulltime student. I have many favorite books, but recently my eyes have been glued on “Common Sense, by Thomas Paine” which I actually read for the first time nearly a year ago while taking Dr. Shmoll’s online history class. I love all food! I believe that if I could trade stomachs with a cow, I would be more than happy to do so. I really like macaroni and cheese, and you can’t have mac’ and cheese without cornbread, rice and gravy, and a juicy steak. But unlike many men, I love to cook for my family and show off my skills. I’ve traveled to many different states, but only for family reunions. I would have to say that the furthest that I traveled was Washington D.C. There are so many different monuments to see in D.C. I would recommend everyone to make a visit, but only in the summer. It rains couches and TV sets out there. For winter break I went to Fresno to visit my older sister, who recent obtained her P.H.D. in psychology. I look up to her because she taught me how to remain motivated no matter what the conditions are. Well, I hope to see some of you around campus. Take care!

    4. Another lover of Mac and Cheese!! my favorite. I've only made it once from scratch and it was a hit. I'd love to make it again but I'm afraid because with specialty dishes, I usually only get it right the first time. It must be the pressure of trying to out do myself. Well you seem to have a lot on your plate this quarter. Stay focused and congratulations on almost being done.

    5. I too love mac and cheese. I am a favorite of Mac and cheese with corn, hotdogs, and mashed patatoes. Man, I am making myself hungry right now. That's cool that you look up to your sibling, it's nice to see the love between the lines and how you hold family close. "It rains couches and TVs," nice one.

  6. Hello everyone! My name is Dominique Maez and I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. When I was young my family decided to pack up and move to California, and since then I have been living my life in Bakersfield. This fall I am starting my senior year and I am really excited! I am majoring in psychology with a minor in CAFS. I am taking this online course because a friend told me the teacher was great, so I thought I would try it out. My favorite book is Dark Secrets by Elizabeth Chandler. I just love the mystery and the romance that is in it.
Most of this summer I had to work, which does not seem too fun but I really do love my job. I am a preschool teacher and I get to work with the terrible twos. They truly are not as bad as everyone thinks they are. I like my job so much, I feel like working with children is something I would like to do for the rest of my life. They are just so interesting and come up with the funniest things to say. I did get to fit a few trips into my summer though, I went to Las Vegas for one of my friend’s birthdays. I also went to Lake Havasu in Arizona, it was so hot! It was 111 degrees when we went but the water was super cool so that made up for the heat. With my busy summer over I am ready for an interesting quarter. I hope everyone has a great quarter, good luck!

    1. Hi Dominique! I just so happen to be a CAFS major. I worked at a day care last summer in which I as well had to take care of some crazy toddlers. But like you mentioned, they are a very interesting age group! I enjoyed watching them learn and interact with each other, the rest of the teaching staff and the older kids. Good luck to you this quarter and after graduation!

    2. Hi Amanda!
It is great to hear that you had a great time working with your toddlers last summer, they really are an interesting age! I love to teach them something and to see them think about it and when they finally get it you can see the little light bulb go off! Good luck to you too after this quarter!

    3. Hello Dominique, although I am not a CAFs major, I have 8 nieces and nephews and understand why you enjoy your job so much. At age two is the best and also when they are the most curious about the world but its the cutest moments. Well good luck on your last year and this fall quarter.

  8. To whom this may appease, :)
The name that was bestowed upon me at birth was Steve Diaz and I hail from the burrows of Bakersfield, CA. I find myself between these lines of public code we call – The Internet – to compose a small synopsis that will further unveil my truth. My interests of study major in Electrical Engineering and Music, which can tell you very little about why I am enrolled in this course; however, the need of this literature class does satisfy my senior status and helps with graduation. The beauty of having it online only makes it better to manage life and full time work. I do fancy a good read, but I don’t find it habitual in my everyday life, nor would I say I have a book of favorites, nevertheless I do tend to gravitate to Edgar Allen Poe, the occasional comic book and music books. When I don’t find myself buried in a great novel, I find myself breaking bread amongst friends and family at the nearby eatery. I am not one to say I have only one favorite cuisine when they all sound and taste so good, it is more the company that’s kept that makes the food more memorable. I am not a grandiose traveler, but my journeys have gone as far as London, United Kingdom and Paris, France this past summer; however, my wife, two children and I do find ourselves regretting coming back home from such a wonder adventure, but it does make it a great experience for another planned trip to return and visit the many friends we made while there. I do recommend if the opportunity to travel comes up that everyone should take advantage to go and live the experiences it puts us in. It makes for great stories. Hello everyone it’s going to be a great quarter, I hope to get to know everyone, let the party begin! I just hope there’s cake!

  9. Hi everyone! My name is Hilario Lopez and I was born in Mexico. When I was going through my senior year in High School, I did not know what I was going to do after that. I decided to go to Bakersfield College to give it a try. As soon as I stepped in a classroom I knew that college was going to be fun and interesting because there was no attendance taken by the instructors, so basically you were responsible for your own grade. To make story short, when I took a Spanish course at Bakersfield College my interest for this language grew a lot more. My love for literature and language has lead me to desire a profession in teaching Spanish at a High school level. I had read a lot of Spanish literature that I do not have a favorite one at this point because they all have different meanings. Do not get me wrong English literature is also enjoyable and very interesting too. I also enjoy reading history books because I believed that history reflects our past in our everyday living. Leaving all this aside, I would like to tell you all that I have had the opportunity to travel to different countries that includes MĂ©xico, Peru, Guatemala, and Brazil. Cultures were something that got my attention right away because they all have different traditions. I was surrounded by friendly people most of the time talking about their past and most important was when they all shared their personal stories with me. To conclude this story you should know that this quarter I will be finishing with my BA in Spanish with a minor in Chicano Studies. Well, I hope to work with you all this quarter. GOOD LUCK!!!

    1. Hello Hilario,
I also attended BC. It is a fantastic college. Did you, by any chance, take a class with professor Torres? One of his classes is Chicano History. In his class, we learned about several Indian cultures, and about the Spaniard’s conquest in the Mexico. It was a very interesting class, and I think you would enjoy it if you have not already taken his course.

  10. Hello class my name is Robert Garcia and my major is Business Administration emphasis Management. I am taking this class in order to satisfy the GWAR and once completed I will be eligible to graduate this quarter. The reason I am taking this class online however, is because right now I live in Lancaster and I don't want to do the commute to Bakersfield. Last quarter I attended school it was a pain in the ass to drive too class and back not to mention the cost.
I was born at Panorama City, California at the Kaiser Permanente hospital. Most of my schooling has been at L.A. County and it wasn't till my later life that I moved to Lancaster. When I started at CSUB I moved out there so that I could attend the school but due to certain circumstances I moved back out to Lancaster during my Spring semester of 2014. Right now I am trying to get a job with my potential degree. During the summer I was looking for a internship but out here in Lancaster it's really hard to find anything because how the job market is out here. It could also be because all I have for experience is the Military which I got out because I wanted to attend college.
The farthest I have been away from home would have to be Afghanistan. I can't say that the trip was all that fun. Now the furthest I've been away from home and had fun would be Germany. I can't really say what my favorite book is because I read a lot of genre's and during specific times in my life I had favorite books but they changed over time. One of my favorite books as a kid for example was The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien which everyone should know what it's about because of the movies. I can also say the same thing for favorite food they change while my tastes change over the course of my life. Right now my favorite food I guess I can say lately I've been eating sushi and have developed a liking for it.

Yes it can be a pain to travel back and forth especially how many times I've done it. Since I was with the Army for 7 years I have been to alot of places and some of them were actually pretty cool so I can't complain to much.

  11. Hello class! My name is Christy Valov and I was born in Delano, CA. My major is liberal studies and I enjoy being around children and helping them grow. The reason I am taking classes online is because I am working two jobs. I recently just started my new job at an elementary school which I do enjoy a lot. The interesting thing is at I attended the school myself when I was younger. My other job was my first real job that I had for two years which I do enjoy. The co workers are great to be around and we have great team work. They moved me to the new Taco Bell in town. Enough about my jobs, my favorite food is chicken. I could eat chicken every day. For a while I would eat Taco Bell all the time because the smell of the food would make me hungry and it was my favorite food for a while. The farthest I traveled was to New York City and to Washington D.C. The scary apart was when we had to go on the subway and all the homeless people around there. The White House looked nothing like you see on television. The paint is all chipped off and the grass is burned. The fun things I did over break were go to the beach with my family. We spent money like it was nothing to us. We went to many restaurants they were so good. Besides working I did enjoy the vacation I had off. This is my first quarter here at CSUB and I am so nervous. It is so different from Bakersfield College.

You love chicken too?! Just recently I went to an Indian restaurant. I had something called butter chicken. Have you ever had butter chicken before? It is amazing! Wow you went to New York?! That is so awesome. I wish I can go to New York in the future. What I really want to do in the future is go to different nations teaching. What about you? 12. Hello, my name is Azael Salinas. I am a senior that is scheduled to graduate with a BS in geology this coming winter quarter. I have lived in Bakersfield my whole life.
I was fortunate enough to travel to South Africa to conduct geologic research with Penn State University two summers ago. I was able to work with a variety of students from all over the world in South Africa while I was housed at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. The local students would take me out to a variety of places around town. We ended up going to several nightclubs one night, and I was very surprised to hear lots of American pop music. Several people were also wearing NFL and NBA hats. American pop culture seems to reach far across the world.
My education endeavor has also taken me to Utah last summer for a mapping class. I mapped various locations with the Southern University of Utah. There are so many places to see geologic wonders in Utah. I spent most of my time at Zion National Park. Zion has several well-known hiking trails. My favorite one was Angles Landing. It was a difficult but rewarding hike. Both trips were an adventure, and were only possible because of me pursuing a higher education. I’m a well-rounded guy, and this is because I like to eat. There is no particular food that is my favorite because I like foods from all cultures. I do enjoy a well-made burger though. I am married with two children. One is a sophomore in high school and the other is a first grader. I don’t normally take online classes, but this one sounds like it is going to be fun.

My name is Febizza Obar, like February and pizza combined. I'm originally from Delano, California but I moved to Bakersfield a few years ago. I'm a Physical Education and Kinesiology major with my concentration in Exercise Science. I eventually want to be a physical therapist for all types of injuries. I'm taking this course because Dr. Schmoll had great online reviews, as well as, for the convenience. My favorite book is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. If you are at a crossroads in life I suggest you read this amazing book. My favorite food is sinigang, which is a soup based Filipino dish with beef meat, vegetables, and spices. The farthest I've ever traveled was to the Philippines but unfortunately I was too young to remember. The highlight of my summer was hiking Bishops Peak in San Luis Obispo to watch the sunrise. I'm excited to interact with you all via blog entries, learn more about writing, and fulfill my GWAR requirement. May the force be with you!

And now that I'm thinking about it I think I might've had you in one of my classes. It might've been theater 232. That class was so much fun! The dish that you mentioned sounds really really yummy. Maybe one day I will have to go try it! Lastly I love your last sentence. May the force be with you! I love Star Wars. Hope to be talking to you soon. Have a great night.

  14. Hello Beautiful Classmates!
My name is Jacky Nguyen, and I am a super senior here at Cal State Bakersfield. I am a Chemistry major but I plan on apply to physical therapy school this year, so wish me luck! Throughout my years at CSUB, I have learned many things the hard way in order to get to where I am today. But through those difficulties, I was able to get the support that I needed to pursue my dreams. I am part of the Kaibigan, a Filipino organization on campus. I am also part of Global Medical Brigades, a student-run health organization. I love being involved with school and I enjoy helping people when they need it.

I was born and raised in Bakersfield, which is not as bad as people make it seem. I was blessed with the opportunity to be able to travel to various places all around the world. I have been to Germany, Italy, France, and Canada for leisure and Ghana and Honduras as part of Global Medical Brigades. My love of traveling has led to my desire of someday going on frequent medical mission trips in order to help the underserved communities in third world countries.

I am a huge animal person, though I do not own any pets. I love to bake and create art pieces in order to get rid of all the stress that I constantly have. I have a ginormous sweet tooth and I love to eat all types of food. My family and friends mean absolutely everything to me. I am a super bubbly and nice person; so if I end up meeting any of you on campus, please come say hi!

The Africa trip was definitely a memorable one. The village we visited reminded me of my grandfather’s ranch in Mexico. We went on a safari trip that got us close to giraffes and some elephants. The animals are amazing when you see them up close. How long have you been a member of the Global Medical Brigades, and what country was you favorite place to visit?

    2. Hi Azael!

I absolutely love giraffes so that is so amazing that you got an opportunity like that. I have been a member since 2010. If you are interested in joining the club, it will be great opportunity! I really cannot pick a favorite because I really enjoyed each country in their own ways. However, my top three were Ghana, Germany, and Canada. I enjoyed Ghana because of the people, Germany because of the land and cleanliness, and Canada because of the attractions.

  15. What's up, everybody? How's it going?
My name is Beau, and I am a Biology major with a minor in Physical Education and Kinesiology. I am taking this class because I need a full year of english to apply to graduate programs, and it satisfies my GWAR requirement. Throughout my college career, I've change my major a few times. I honestly should have applied to college as an 'undeclared' major rather than changing majors few times. Nonetheless, I look at it as a "soul searching" type of experience. I finally realized that my heart belonged to bacteria. Yes, germs. I'm very intrigued with infectious diseases and how minuscule organisms can kill a person. So, I one day hope to be a pathologist.

Before all these decisions happened, I grew up in a small town north of Bakersfield. After graduating high school, I moved to Tucson, Arizona to attend the University of Arizona. Out of state tuition is killer, so I decided it would be best to move home and attend CSUB. Although U of A was and still is awesome, I have really enjoyed my time at CSUB. I've been involved with a few organizations and met wonderful people, and I hope to meet some more during my last quarters here.

I love comic books, long walks on the beach (unless I get tar stuck on my feet, then I cut the walk short), sports, socks, and attending raves. I really love the euphoric feeling dancing under the electric sky of lights gives me; then it ends, and I realize I must go back to reality. I'm a cool guy, who loves talking to everyone and anyone, so feel free to leave a comment.

    1. Hello Beau,
I understand your comment on being taken out of reality when you listen to rave music. I listen to some also and the beat that sweeps you up can really take you to some interesting places, be it in your mind or reality. It can be a great emotional or motivational helper with many things in life, at least it seems to be that way with me. Though books are a great release on reality for me as well.

I can see how you got interested in infectious diseases as well. I didn't pursue a career like you, but it is very interesting to see the new diseases that pop up or find out where they originate from. Whenever I think of diseases like this I always am reminded of zombies. There is a new show called The Strain that is interesting because the disease or parasite is always adapting. Just like the common cold. Then I always wonder what the future would be like 100-200 or more years from now.

      Delete
    2. Hi Katie! Who are some of your favorite Artists/DJ's? I think books are a good release on reality as well. What are some of your favorite books? I am currently reading a book called Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan, and I am actually enjoying it. It reminds me a lot of the show Modern Family, but they're all from Singapore and filthy rich. It's entertaining.

I really like zombies! I have to watch that show, I'll check out my tv listings to see if I can catch it one day. That's cool that they made parasites adapt because a lot of bacteria adapted for some many years to survive. So cool but scary. My favorite movies that deal with microbiology and immunology are World War Z and Contagion. World War Z is so cool because it deals with zombies, and Contagion is so awesome because it's like an investigation throughout the movie to discover the origin of a pandemic disease that came to the US. If you haven't seen them, you should check them out.

      Nice to meet you

    3. Ya World War Z was a very different experience from the other zombie movies I have seen, and very intense, but that is what made it so unique and good. It is always interesting to see the many different ways people can come up with the same topics and zombies are a topic that many people play with. I saw contagion also, it is very fun to be so pulled into a movie because I always think, what if something like this happens one day, but I also know it is highly unlikely, just fun to think that way though.

My top 3 DJ's are Tiesto, Skrillex, and David Guetta. They all just have very interesting sounds. I have too many books to count at the moment, but if the theme has to do with magic, fantasy, romance, or action adventure then I'm going to read it. If those books have a comedic quality then that is a plus also. There is this book that might catch your interest, but I have yet to read. Its called Resurrection, Inc. by Kevin J. Anderson. Not sure if you ever watch the movie Warm Bodies, but it makes me think of that movie in a way, because a zombie has a consciousness.

    4. Tiesto and David Guetta are two of my favorites! I really like Skrillex too. I saw Calvin Harris at Coachella and he became one of my favorite DJs to watch live. His set was so awesome. Oh cool, I definitely will look into that book. I really liked Warm Bodies too. I'm really intrigued by fantasy and magic also. I've see the Beautiful Creatures movie and thought that would be something cool to maybe read one day. Have you read that series?

  16. Hello class, my name is Brandi Glover. I am a senior peak major. I am taking this class because I needed the units, as well as to satisfy the GWAR requirements. To be honest, I am slightly intimidated by this online course. I have always enjoyed writing but, do not have lots of experience with online courses. I am looking forward to see how successful I can be with this class. I will apologize ahead of time because I will be asking everyone questions.

Furthermore to tell you more about myself, I am not from Bakersfield. I am from Lancaster, about an hour east of here. I chose CSUB because it was commutable. At the time of choice I wasn't planning on attending a university because I couldn't afford it. My parents told me just to go for it anyways and here I am. I now live out here. The reason I am a kinesiology major is because the human body and the physiology of it fascinates me. I find it so exciting to learn about what is going on in the body with almost every movement. The body is incredibly complex. I also enjoy sports and love helping others when it comes to promoting healthy lifestyles. Over the summer I was able to volunteer with kids from the ages 5-17 and get them into everyday physical activity and educate a little more about nutrition.

This summer I also traveled to New York and New Jersey for two weeks. Besides my direct family, I have no other family in California so I consider the east coast to be "home". The lifestyle and culture on the east coast is significantly different from the west coast. In New York the amount of cultural and freedom and expression is infinite. For anyone who is into music or art, I highly suggest you make a trip to New York if you ever get the chance. The diversity out there is beautiful. Feel free to ask me anything. I love everyone!

    1. Hello Brandi,
I'm glad to hear you pursued furthering yourself at a university. I was in the same boat myself with not having a job and money when I first attended a year ago. I always keep in mind that when I'm finished and get a good job, I can pay off anything that I owe. So hang in there if things start to feel overwhelming. As for the online class, You shouldn't be intimidated. I felt the same when I first took one and now I prefer them over attending classes. Plus its always a good trait to at least try everything once.

That is exciting that you were able to go to New York, that has always been a place that seemed like a must see whenever traveling. I always thought the huge buildings seemed a bit intimidating. What was your first thought when you arrived?

    2. Hello Brandi,
I went to New York myself it was fun when I went with my school. I am glad you enjoyed your time in New York.

    3. Hi Brandi,
I was wondering why you were going to do with your kinesiology major. You could really go down many different avenues with that degree. I am a personal trainer, but I am an English literature major. I was wondering how intense you found your classes.

Best of luck in the class.

      Rachel

    4. Hey Katie,
The big building are indeed intimidating. The only thing they are missing on out there are our mountains. I love California! My first thought after landing was "where can I get some New York pizza?" The pizza there is euphoric.

    5. Hi Rachel,

I plan on pursuing a career in physical therapy and attending grad school or furthering my education in nutrition. That's awesome you are a personal trainer. I'd love to get into that. It's definitely been on my mind. The science classes are intense. They only about 4 classes that I consider intense so if you ever wanted to take that route, I'm more than sure you would be fine.

  17. Hi, I'm Samantha. I'm from California, born and bred. I currently have a double major of Human Resources and English lit which is why I'm taking this online course-trying to knock out as much as I can as fast as I can. My favorite book is The Blue Sword by Robin Mckinley but Kylie Chan's White Tiger is a very, very close second. Favorite food is anything chinese...really anything just about. The farthest I've traveled from home is Florida, actually been to 26 states during a few family road trips. Over winter break I worked like a dog. In short. I don't really like talking about myself to people I don't really know but since this was a requirement I forced my self; like a hot poker to the rear.

Playing video games is a hobby of mine, I'm not very good but I endeavor to do at least decently. One of the best game series I've ever gotten the privilege to enjoy was the .hack franchise, which, now if i tried to buy them they would cost me over $1000 to get all seven. This horrifying fact always makes me want to kick myself for not buying them when they were $60 because for a high schooler with no job that was a lot of money.

Reading has been a hobby of mine since I was about six or seven; apparently I stole a book on unicorns from my elementary school's library and I still have it to this day. At this point in my adult life I own about a thousand books or more what with the invention of the Kindle and Nook. No, I did not buy them all, retired family friends have gifted me with many books over the years.

    1. Hi Samantha, I can sympathize with having alot of books because reading also became my hobby at a young age. My greatest problem with the books is that I own the physical copies and now its getting hard to find places for them. I did not know that the .hack series was that much. I have played two of them and still own them which is cool but I also didn't realize that there was 7 of them.

    2. Hi Samantha, I also like to play video games in my spare time. I'm not very good at them also but it's a good way to kill time. I also enjoy reading different types of books. I hope you have a great quarter!

That's pretty neat that you have been a lot of places. I bet it was nice experience.

  18. Hello All,

My name is Rachel. I am an English literature major and this is my last semester. I am both happy and sad about that. All of my classes are online this semester because I wanted the flexibility to work a job and go to school. My job has nothing to do with English. I am a personal trainer, but I still enjoyed all of my classes and found it to be worth my time. I think enjoyment in what you do is what really matters in this world. You must enjoy the process.

Having said all of that, I think I have enjoyed reading books as homework. It almost feels like a cheat to be getting credit for it. My favorite book is Alice in Wonderland because of all of the hidden meanings. I overlook the author, Lewis Carrol’s, problematic personal life.

Traveling is another one of my passions. I jumped on a plane and moved to Guatemala last year to teach English for six months. My family almost had a heart attack because of how dangerous it can be. But, I had a great experience. I don’t think teaching is for me, but I am really thankful to have had that opportunity. Learning a new culture can be enriching. For example, the pace of life was at turtle speed compared to America and everyone greets one another with a kiss on the cheek, instead of a hand shake. Small differences add up.

I wish everyone the best in this class.

    1. Hello Rachel, congrats on this being your last semester. Classes online are a good way to enjoy the class are a pace one desires. It is so cool to be a personal trainer. You must really like working out and exercise. I cant't believe you went to Guatemala to teach English, that's very inspiring.

  19. Hello, my name is Katie and I am from Bakersfield. I rarely ever leave Bakersfield, which is sad because I want to see many different places. I have been to Hawaii and Mexico on some family vacations when I was younger as well as some out of town vacations, but know that I know what I really enjoy I can explore certain areas better.

I am majoring in Business (Human Resources) and English. I plan to have a job in the Human Resources field, but if I can get a job that would benefit both majors I would be ecstatic. Right now I’m just taking English because I enjoy reading and writing. I am also a very big book lover, I prefer physical books over the kindle, but with school being expensive I have to cut back on getting the physical books because kindle is just so much cheaper at times. My favorite book at the moment is a series by C. E. Murphy. The first book is called Urban Shaman and it has a great mix of adventure, comedic characters (especially the main one), and spicy romance. I love the aspect of saving the planet or earth from things or elements that poison it. The spiritual connection the main character has is also one of the main reasons I chose this book. To be connected to the earth and yourself on a spiritual lever is very interesting.

I enjoy taking online courses, because it makes working around schedules a lot easier, especially when it comes to a job and other classes. I also like that you have the whole week to complete assignments, so you don’t get over loaded on one day because you have 5 assignments due all on the next day. So there is a type of freedom that you don’t get with many other classes.

    1. Hi Katie, yes, Kindle is a cheaper way to read books. I do agree with it is better to read a physical book than to read from a tablet but yes, school is expensive and it is good way to save money.

      Delete
    2. Hi Katie, I also agree about having a physical book rather than the ebook. I own a nook and when I first got it I thought it was such a grand idea because I could carry around a bunch of different books, because I am usually reading about six at a time, in a light convenient manor; but I still found myself buying actual books. Even though I prefer the real books, if I find an ebook that I have been wanting for 99 cents; which I recently did, I am definitely going to set aside my feelings about ebooks and take the bargain.

  20. Hello there, im Nataly Medrano I also go by Nat. My major is business in marketing. I chose marketing because its a useful skill if I want to have a business one day. Plus my dad and sister pushed me to major in business because it can open alot of doors for me. Well I am taking this class online because it is the only English 305 class offered this semester. I really dont like online classes but since I had Dr. Brett Schmoll for history last year I liked his way of teaching, such that it changed my strong hate for history into high interest. I dont really have a favorite book but I do like books like paradise lost, sophie's world and so forth. My favorite food is Japanese food. I like teriyaki chicken with white rice and steam vegetables. Thats what I get everytime I go to a Japanese food. The farthest place I have been to would be Las Cruzes, Mexico which is a really small town that my family was born in. The things I did this winter break were I went to San Diego, Santa Monica, Las Vegas, Long Beach, Utah, and Arizona. I really enjoy to leave town when I have a break from school. Plus I think leaving and exploring new places help you grow as a person. I cant wait to see what new things I can learn in this class. Good luck to everyone. Cant wait to meet you all.

  21. Hello Class,

My name is Larry Ronk and I'm returning to CSUB this semester after transferring to Bakersfield College to play baseball there. I am twenty two years old and exciting for my next few years here at CSUB. I am studying to become an petroleum engineer and hoping to reach my baccalaureate in two years. I live in Delano about thirty miles north of Bakersfield and travel here for school twice a week. I'm taking this class online due to the fact that I wasn't able to register on time for other classes required.
During my summer break, I traveled to many sport games. My favorite teams are the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Los Angeles Lakers. I've been to seven games this year for the Dodgers and I usually average about twelve games a year. I recently traveled to Dallas Texas to watch the 49ers play my favorite football team the Dallas Cowboys play. It was my first time in Texas and I had so much fun. From all the bar hoping to the line dancing country bars, it was all a great experience. I look forward to watching the Lakers play this up coming season.
I hope to learn a lot from this class and this is officially my first online class I've taken. I hope I pass this class and able to move on to my next classes and not mess up. I'm a little worried about missing assignments or forgetting when things are due. I hope to do well and exceed my expectations.

    2. Hey Larry, Just read your introduction and find it awesome that your favorite football team is also mine. I have been to Texas but sadly it was to visit family and not to see a football game with are team playing. As for Online classes I have to say I prefer to actually be seating in front of a teacher because I've had bad experiences with it but I know that with effort this class can be passed.

  22. Hello, I'm Sabrina Aguirre and I am majoring in Sociology and this is my fourth quarter at CSUB. I'm always nervous about taking online classes but given my work schedule and mommy duties, I really have no choice. I stay pretty busy but whenever I have the opportunity to get away from Bakersfield and its unforgiving heat, I take it. The furthest place I have traveled to is Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The weather was gorgeous and the locals were extremely kind. The only complaints I had were the Iguanas in our hotel and having to jump off a moving bus. Later these "complaints" became the laughter and highlights of my trip. I also enjoy spending time in the Bay Area where I grew up. I am of course a 49ers fan but not only because I grew up near San Francisco but because my father was a Cowboys fan and I needed a rival. Needless to say, my father and I are never in agreement. I wish I could say I was a bookworm but unfortunately I am not. I do try to read for leisure and I get through quite a bit of chapters but I guess I have a short attention span or maybe I just haven't found the right genre of books for me. So if anyone has any recommendations for a book I will not be able to put down please do not hesitate to share. The last book I read for leisure from the beginning to end was White Oleander and right about now I'm a few chapters in in several books.

  23. Hello class, my name is Aaron and I'm a liberal studies major. I'm from Northridge, CA but I have also lived in other places in the State. I am taking this online course because online courses are awesome. At first, I thought that inline courses were a bit confusing but after a couple weeks they didn't seem that bad. The best part about taking online courses to me is that you don't have to go to class. The flexibility of online courses allows me to work at my own pace and planning life around them is somewhat easy. I'm not too sure what my favorite book is because there re so many different books that I have read that were enjoyable. If I had to pick one book to be my favorite it has to be Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck is my favorite author thus far. I like that he wrote about common people and the many different struggles that they went through. I also like that some of his books deal with the time period of the early part of the 1900s. My favorite type of food is Mexican. Growing up, my mom made many different Mexican dishes that I enjoyed. I haven't really traveled too far away from home. I have visited the northern part of Mexico and also the surrounding States that are around California. I would like to think I'm well traveled in California because I've visited many different parts of the State. There are so many different landscapes and climates in California. I like that you can go snowboarding and visit the beach all in one day. I recently moved back to southern California from northern California. There are so many different things you can do in northern California if you like the outdoors. I do hope that I get a chance to see other parts of the world. There are so many different places and experiences that are out there. Maybe one day I can get the opportunity and the means to visit other places. During the summer break I really didn't do anything too notable. Yes, I live a boring life. I think things would be different if I could just win the lottery! This is my last quarter at CSUB and I have to say I feel a little bit apprehensive about the whole thing. Sometimes I still ask myself if I'm doing the right thing in regards to my major. I think teaching a class is going to be troubling at first. Either way, there is no looking back at this point. I look forward to reading all of your comments. I hope you all have a great quarter! take care.

I'm sure once November comes and you find your first job in your career, you will forget all about it and be glad that you did what you did. Well I hope you have a swelling last quarter and just remember to stay positive. Take care!

    2. Hi Aaron!!
If you are interested in traveling abroad, you should join the Global Medical Brigades club on campus. It is such a great experience and it could help you with your apprehensiveness with your major. The club consists of students and doctors traveling to third world countries and providing free health care to the underserved communities. We had a liberal studies major go with us one time and she got the opportunity to teach the children and adults personal hygiene and things like that. So I think you would have a great time there, plus you get to meet amazing people on your journey!

    4. Hello,
Well Aaron, as you say, you may live a boring life but you sound like an interesting individual. You are very right about the the many moods of California. I too have travel through the entire state and we really do have some beautiful areas. In fact, tomorrow I will be in Monterey then off to Santa Cruz for my sons birthday weekend. About teaching, I'm sure you will do just fine once you get your feet wet. Once I graduate I plan to continue to work in social services. Some days I wish I had went into another field but overall the good days, as few as they may be, definitely out weigh the bad.

      Delete
    5. Thank you for the replies! All of you have been very encouraging. Jacklyn, that sounds like an awesome program. I was also thinking of maybe teaching English in a different country for a few years after I graduate. I think that would be very exciting. Time will only tell.

  24. Hello fellow classmates and professor, my name is Beatrice and I am a senior here at CSUB and this is actually my last quarter here. I am double majoring in Criminal Justice and Spanish and I am hoping to use my degree in the Law field. I am originally from Los Angeles but decided to move out here to Bakersfield to further my education. I consider myself quite athletic since I’ve been playing basketball and softball since I was nine years old. Although I didn’t decide to continue being part of a sports’ team after high school, I still enjoy spending my free time playing basketball, softball, and football. The reason why I am taking an online course is because it allows me to do more with my day and it gives me the freedom to complete my work on my pace. I also decided to take this course online because I am currently working on getting a new job within my career filed; which requires random working hours. Although I would like to say I’m a bookworm and read all the time, I’m actually not. I have read several books that I was required to read but I still haven’t found a series of books that I truly enjoy reading. One of the last books that I truly enjoyed was A Child Called It. It is an older book, but I think its impact on a reader will always remain the same. When it comes to my favorite foods, I have to go with Mexican dishes and seafood. I know it’s pretty biased since I am Mexican myself but there’s nothing I have tried that beats pozole, birria, and tacos. I have traveled to a couple places outside of California like Arizona, Nevada and Colorado but it doesn’t occur too often since I’ve had to take summer classes to finish my B.A. Over my summer break I was forced to stay in Bakersfield to take my senior seminar class, since it was canceled for this fall quarter. Although I spend most of my summer in school I was able to travel to Tijuana, Mexico to attend a concert/show. Well, I look forward to hearing more from you all and hope to get to meet some of you around campus. Best luck to everyone this quarter!

    1. Hi Beatrice! Wow your last quarter... must be quite exciting! I'm currently beginning my fourth year here but will most likely be going into my fifth year as I switched my major at the end of my second year. That's awesome that you want to go into the Law field, I spent the last two weeks of our summer break in Jury Duty, so that whole experience is still very fresh in my mind! That was the first time I was able to get a big insight into how the court system works and how trials are conducted.. interesting stuff! Also, what part of Colorado have you traveled to? Of all the states I've traveled to CO has to be my favorite, I plan on doing my grad studies there.

    2. Beatrice, double majoring was probably very time consuming!! I admire your ambition. I took CJ 100 as a freshman and really enjoyed the course. I wish I could have taken more Criminal Justice courses, but unfortunately they don't have much to do with my major. Congratulations on this being your last quarter. I wish you the best of luck.

    3. Hello Anthony, yes, it is exciting and I can't wait. Oh really why was the sudden change. It might seem odd but I've been wanting to get selected for jury duty but wont see it happening since i'll be working in that field soon. Yes, I totally agree its very interesting because its about stuff that happens everyday and we never turn to see what we can do, besides complain. My Godmother lives in Denver so I've only had the chance to visit there but I'm planning to go again once I graduate in November. Well best of luck when you're out there. I love the snow but I don't think I can leave the Cali weather.

    4. Hi Taylor, yes, double majoring is time consuming but I think I've done a good job so far since I will complete both major in 13 quarter; which is only an additional quarter after my four years. Thank you I appreciate your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed a class in my major they are all quite interesting since they have to do a lot with our rights. Well that's unfortunate, but at least you got an understanding and taste of how and what our Criminal Justice System is about.

    5. hello beatrice, sounds like you have your mind set on your career and the rest of your life. Most people don't really focus on the future and make a last minute decision and assume it's the best way to set the future for them. Mexican dishes are usually the best in most cases. I'm sure if you pursued your athletic career, your major and future would be a hold a little which in my case it did. It's hard to keep progressing in sports and I think knowledge and school is the way to go instead of putting athletics first.

  25. Greetings, English 305!
My name is Anthony Dao, I’m currently beginning my fourth year here at CSUB. I was born right here in Bakersfield, Ca and have been here for the better part of 22 years. I was formerly a chemistry major with the intentions of becoming a pharmacist, but after doing some job shadowing I quickly realized that wasn’t the field for me, so since the end of my sophomore year I have been a Kinesiology major in the PEAK program. Following graduation here at CSUB I plan to head out to Colorado to begin my graduate studies in Nutritional Sciences. I’m the head cross country coach at West High School here in town, as well as the head long distance coach for the track team in the spring. I was competing on the track team here at CSUB, but after picking up several nagging injuries my junior year I have since stopped competing. My main motive for taking an online course was simply to keep my schedule open. I’m sure like many of you, taking at least two other classes on top of working can be quite time consuming, so taking this course from my laptop at my own convenience seemed to be the best option. It’d be very hard to select one book as my favorite, but I just re-read Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell for the second time, and I must say it is quite a mind bending read. Aside from running I’m a fan of many sports, soccer, or football for some, tops the list. Just last year I had the chance to fly over to England to see my favorite team play one of their last games of the season. I’m a die-hard Liverpool fan, so I hope there aren’t any Manchester fans around!
PS. Dr. Schmoll, Chelsea are looking quite good this season.. best of luck!

    1. Indeed, Anthony! But I worry that Man U might be on the rebound. Luck to your Liverpool, too. If my nephew had not coerced me into being a Chelsea fan, I would most likely support Liverpool--they feel more, I don't know, of the people--the opposite of my elitist Blues!
      Welcome to the class!

    2. Anthony, kinesiology sounds like a good major for you. Being a coach for cross country sounds like you are all about fitness and health, so a career as a nutritionist sounds like a good fit.

    3. Dr. Schmoll, I must say I've never really been a fan of Diego Costa, but Fabregas is something else.. he pulls all of the strings behind every play.. and there's always room for another Reds supporter!

Taylor, yeah you know even after switching into the peak program I wasn't sure what I wanted to do professionally for a while, but after being introduced into the nutritional sciences field I knew I had finally found an area of study that I was really interested in. If I don't pursue being a dietitian, I would love to become a professor and teach nutritional sciences. Being a coach definitely helped influence my decision, not that I enjoy being the big man and always giving out orders, but instructing and guiding others and seeing results is always great for me as a coach, so I feel being a professor and educating others would be a great fit for myself as well!

  27. Hello everyone! My name is Taylor Robertson. I was born and raised for the majority of my life in Bakersfield, CA. This is my fourth year at CSUB and I am a Human Biology major with hope to become an emergency room physician. I am currently employed at the Centre for Neuro Skills- a local traumatic brain injury facility. I love the fast pace environment of healthcare and knowing that my career is helping someone makes me feel good about what I am doing with myself. I am taking this course online to satisfy the GWAR and my hectic work schedule does not allow for many options. My favorite book is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. I have read it numerous times since the fifth grade. For as long as I could remember, tacos have been my favorite food. I could eat tacos everyday and it would not bother me at all. The furthest I have ever travelled was to Chicago a few years ago. Over the break, I did travel up and down California for leisure, but most of my break was spent working. I also got over my fear of motorcycles over the break. Initially afraid of motorcycles because both of my brothers have been injured while riding, I was determined to get over my fear. I was the passenger on the back of my boyfriend's motorcycle and I believed that we reached a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour. I really enjoyed my break from school, but now I'm just trying to pass all my classes so that I can graduate and move on to the next chapter of my life. That is all.

  28. Hello everyone! My name is Denise Carrillo and I am 22 years old. I was born and raised in Los Angeles but my family decided to move here to Bakersfield so that we could be closer to other family members that already live here. I am currently attending CSUB as a full time student and I also work as well. I am majoring in Business Administration but I have a concentration in Management. This is my fifth year of college but thankfully it will be my last since I will be graduating this year. Once I graduate I hope to move back to Los Angeles and start my own business. The reason why I am taking this course online is because it is the only way I would be able to take it because I spend most of my time at work or in my other classes. Taking this course online would allow me to complete this course during my free time. My Favorite book is called The Fault in Our Stars. It is a very good book and they also already made it into a movie. The furthest I have ever been is to Mexico when I went a couple years ago. I do however want to move to France later on in life. Over the summer break I didn't not get the chance to do much due to my work schedule. I did however get to spend two weeks at a beach house with my friends. Other than that I just spent time with my family and friends. Hopefully during winter break I can have more time to do more stuff.

    1. Hello Denise, congratulations on this being your last year! I agree with you, The Fault in Our Stars is a great book and I thought the movie was just as great.

  29. Hello, my name is Kirsten Adams, and I am from Bakersfield. I am a psychology major and a business minor, and this is my senior year. I am really excited and also a little nervous because I still have no idea what I want to do after I graduate. I have been considering adding another major in biology if I can but I am not sure if I should or even if I can. I am taking an online class because it makes working more convenient and because I really enjoy online classes. I love to read and if I had to choose my favorite book it would Old Magic by Marianne Curley. The farthest I have ever traveled was to France and Italy my sophomore year in high school with my Spanish class. It was an experience I will never forget. I love to travel and I hope to do more traveling in the future. Unfortunately this summer break I did not do anything fun or exciting, because I was working the whole time. I work at Tutti Frutti and I love it. My coworkers are amazing and like family to me. I could not ask for a better work atmosphere, especially with how stressed I get with school.

  30. Hello class! My name is Raul Cano I was born in Los Angeles, California. I was about 9 years old when my parents were offered a job transfer to Bakersfield and here I am still. I’ve grown to love Bakersfield even though there isn’t much to do here and I like that Bakersfield still has the feel of a small town even though its population has increased. This school year will be my last, I’m currently a senior majoring in psychology with a minor in economics. Many people tell me that’s an odd mix for major and minor, but I tell them that economics is interesting to me. I’ve never taken an online class because I heard from many students that online classes are hard and that it can be somewhat confusing following the class schedule. Hopefully that isn’t the case and instead I’ll be able to enjoy this class. If I had to pick a favorite food it would definitely be pizza. I love traveling, it has become my new hobby. I haven’t traveled to far away from California other than traveling to Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. My next trip will be to Spain where I hope to visit the place where my family originally came from. This past summer wasn’t long enough. I went to Mexico for about a month and went took a couple of tours around Mexico. Mexico is a beautiful country, but unfortunately its going through some troubled times. Well, hopefully everyone enjoys this quarter and stays optimistic during those long nights of studying.

  31. What's up, Raul? What part of Mexico did you visit? I want to visit one day but I'm scared. I've never been.

    1. I went to Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Puerto Vallarta, Morelia, to name a few. Its was a great experience. What made it even better was that I have relatives in Mexico. Having my relatives tag along help because they knew how to navigate around the country. Don't be as long as you stay away from the troubled area you'll be fine. I stayed mainly around the tourist areas in every city I visited. Also while visiting Mexico I felt safe because of the police that was visible.

  32. Hello, my name is Hector Aguirre and I grew up in Earlimart, CA. I am a senior this year and I am majoring in Computer Information Systems. I am taking an online course this quarter because I currently hold a full time job with required overtime, and the commute from Delano to Bakersfield can make it difficult to attend regular class sessions. Although I can get reeled into a good book from time to time, I wouldn’t be able to name a favorite since I don’t regularly read for pleasure, and a book title does not seem to be wandering through my mind at the moment. While I enjoy a large variety of foods, I do find myself looking for Italian food and cuisines of that nature more often than not. While growing up, my family and I would travel to Mexico and visit my grandparents. We normally go to the state of Zacatecas, but one year we traveled to Mexico City where we visited my Aunt and cousins. Mexico City is by far the furthest city I have been too. During my summer break I was able to get a few days off of work to visit Big Bear Lake to celebrate the birthday of a good friend. I was also able to get away and visit San Francisco for the first time. I drove out to the beach and ate some good clam chowder as well, but the majority of my break revolved around my family, friends and the good old television set.

    1. I can completely relate with your reason for taking an online course. I am so glad we have the option to attend school while maintaining a busy work schedule and long commutes definitely do not help. Visiting family in Mexico sounds like a fun trip. I would love to go to Mexico and see the Aztec pyramids someday.

  33. Hello everyone, my name is Angelica Tucker and I am from Kingsburg, CA. My major was psychology but I recently changed it after getting a job as an after school teacher and realizing that I want to teach. I am now a Liberal Studies major and I do not plan on changing it anymore. Once I finished my general education classes it took me awhile to figure out what I actually wanted to do and when I got a job working with children it was like a light switched on. I never imagined that I would actually enjoy working and I feel the passion that I’ve always heard about but never felt. When I first started my job I would leave thinking that this is something I would do even if I didn’t get a paycheck from it and that is the feeling that I have always wanted to have about my career choice.
I am taking this English course to fulfill my GWAR requirement and since I live about 2 hours away from Bakersfield an online course was the best option for me. I love reading and don’t really have an all-time favorite book but the last book I read that I really enjoyed was The Fault in Our Stars. My sisters and I like to do this thing where we read books that will later be made into a movie, this has actually turned into a hobby of mine. I just finished the Maze Runner series and I’m going to see the movie tomorrow and then I will start reading Gone Girl which hits theatres in October. Pretty much every month we see a book to film adaptation of a book we’ve read. I also don’t have a favorite food but if I had to pick it would either be Mexican food or Chinese food, but I like having different options and will eat almost anything as long as it isn’t seafood. The farthest I’ve traveled from home would be Las Vegas. I usually just stay in California but I would like to travel more in the future. However, right now it isn’t really a priority. I do get married next year so I will finally get to pick a nice getaway destination for our honeymoon.

  34. My name is Audria. Something very interesting about me is I'm a twin to a boy. He is my right-hand side. I don't know what I would do without him. I currently live in Bakersfield California. I have lived in Bakersfield California my whole life and I am now 21 years old. I turn 22 years old in December. I am so excited! I am extremely friendly and I am outgoing. I love to do a lot of things with my friends. I currently go to CSU bakersfield. I am majoring in a liberal studies and my minor is going to be special education. I fell in love with special education when I was in the eighth grade. My principal asked me to help out in the classroom. And I just fell in love so quickly. My favorite movie is one night with the King. It is a story in the Bible about Queen Esther and how she was able to stand up for her people. I have two favorite hobbies. One hobby is singing and the other hobby is dancing. I have been dancing since I was seven years old and I still dance till this day. Right now I am currently in a play. It's going to be amazing. I am learning a script and I'm also learning a dance. The reason why I am taking this course is because it is a requirement to graduate for my major. I really hope I learn so much in this course that is going to help me become an amazing teacher. Right now my favorite food is sushi and my favorite dessert is cheesecake. I just love to eat. I look forward to taking this course and getting to know my professor in the classmates.
